Shirakawago
Shirakawago is a traditional village in Gifu Prefecture.
It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
The charm of Shirakawago is that you can see the original landscape of Japan.
Rice fields and houses with thatched roofs are a very nostalgic scene for Japanese people.
Since this area has one of the heaviest snowfalls in Japan, the roofs of the houses are made at a tighter angle to prevent snow from accumulating in the area.
Incidentally, this is the same kind of scenery that is used in Hayao Miyazaki’s animation, My Neighbor Totoro.
It’s not difficult to see this kind of scenery even now in rural areas, but it’s difficult for foreigners to visit there because it’s not very well known.
In that sense, Shirakawago is a valuable tourist destination that shows foreigners the traditional charm of Japan.

白川郷は岐阜県にある伝統的集落です。
1995年にユネスコの世界遺産に登録されました。
白川郷の魅力は日本の原風景を見ることができる所です。
田んぼと茅葺の屋根を持つ家々は、日本人にとってとても懐かしい風景です。
この地域は日本の中でも豪雪地帯のため、家の屋根の傾斜をきつくすることで積雪を防いでいます。
ちなみに宮崎駿監督のアニメ、となりのトトロの舞台もこういう風景ですね。
現在でも、地方でこうした風景を見ることは難しく無いのですが、知名度が無さすぎるため、外国の方が観光地として目指すのは難しいんですよね。
そういう意味で、外国の方に日本の伝統的な魅力を伝えてくれる白川郷は貴重な観光地です。
