If you want to see a Japanese garden in Kyushu, Sengan-en is the place to go!

Among the many gardens in Japan, the Sengan-en in Kagoshima is a great place to visit. There are not many places in Japan where you can experience so much culture and history in one place.

Sengen-en was built as a garden of the Shimazu family who ruled Kagoshima. The garden is not only beautifully designed (to my surprise, Mt Sakurajima is used as a built-up mountain! )At the end of the Edo period (1603-1867), the 28th head of the family, Shimazu Nariakira, built many structures in the park to introduce Western technology to the city. Surprisingly, a local city developed these technologies on its own, not by the government. Visitors to the garden can also enjoy Kagoshima’s local cuisine and Satsuma Kiriko, a special glasswork product.

A new JR station is scheduled to open near the garden in 2024. We hope that more and more people will visit the garden in the future.
